Questions

Plain answers to what workers ask us

Who can use the clinic?

People who work, or worked, for someone else and live or work in the Jackson area. Take the short check and we’ll tell you if we can help.

Do you take every case?

No. We take the matters where we think we can help and where a lawyer’s time will make a difference. When we can’t, we say so and point you to other help.

What does a first conversation cost?

Your fee depends on your household’s size and income, and some clients pay nothing. We tell you the number in writing before you decide anything. Court filing costs are separate, and we explain them first.

Do I need documents to get started?

No. The short check asks questions, not for papers. After we talk, we’ll tell you what would help.

Will you contact my employer?

Only if you tell us to. Many matters start with a lawyer reading your records and giving you options before anyone at work hears anything.

I’m still working there. Can I still call?

Yes. Many people do. We can help you plan what to say, what to save and what to avoid.

What if I’m worried about immigration status?

Tell us when we talk. Some protections apply to people regardless of status, and we’ll explain what we can and can’t do.

Can you help with an unemployment denial?

It isn’t one of our four areas, but tell us anyway. We’ll point you to a program that handles it if we can’t.

Do you work with employers?

Never. Everything we do is on the employee’s side.

Is what I tell you private?

Yes. After we start working together it’s protected, and even before that we keep what you tell us to ourselves.

Still wondering about something?

Call us or take the short check, and we’ll answer it with you.
